Notary Public Duties

After earning a bachelor’s degree in international sports administration and agency law, Jacob Scholl earned a juris doctor from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. In addition to possessing certifications in legal research and mediation, Jacob Scholl is also a registered notary public in Colorado.

Notary publics are individuals who have the legal authority to verify the legality of documents. While requirements differ by state, notaries should pass an exam and register with their respective secretary of state. Notaries serve as credible witnesses for the signing of important paperwork for activities such as real estate transactions and establishing a power of attorney or trust.

Notary publics also play an essential role in legalizing documents for individuals and businesses overseas. For example, Americans interested in marrying abroad or getting a visa may need legalized copies of their birth certificates. Many nations will not recognize American birth certificates unless they have been reviewed by a notary public and stamped with an apostille by the corresponding state’s secretary of state.
